It’s funny how much the original Aliens vs. Predator got all this stuff right. In going bigger and gorier, Rebellion actually kind of ended up sabotaging the game’s resemblance to the original films. In Aliens vs. Predator, your goals were always pretty specific to the species you were playing as, and the gameplay was significantly different as well - Aliens were more about stealthily navigating levels and only attacking if necessary (as you’d die just about instantly), Predators were all about infiltration and elimination of targets, and the marines were… well, okay, a bit more generic shooter, but there was still a lot of the tension and fear due to the game’s low light levels and great sound design.
Granted, I haven’t played the new version, but it seems like every Alien-related game after Aliens vs Predator 2 really got it wrong, and the upcoming Colonial Marines doesn’t seem any better either, focusing on visuals but not doing anything distinctive gameplay-wise (unless you count quick time events in a shooter as fresh and exciting).
